To Evan: Hi, I'm that Hans from the Peru section. I already have tried to get a login, and it seems that I have. But I don't see any difference. My modifications of the articles are still listet with my IP instead of my login name and I never have been asked to write my user page.

Could their have occured a problem or is their something I didn't understand. Do you athenticate the loged in users with cookies? Maybe, I have blocked them.

Yes, the authentication is with cookies. I'm not sure of the content of the cookies, but I can tell you that we won't do anything evil with them. I'm pretty sure it's just a session ID that keys into your user account on the server side. The cookie name is PHPSESSID, and it might actually be a PHP thing rather than a MediaWiki thing.

If you can selectively enable cookies in your browser, or whatever you use to block them (I use Privoxy, myself, and have an exception line in my Privoxy config for wikitravel.org), that's fine. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, please feel free to continue contributing to Wikitravel without a user account -- that's totally fine. The advice on this page says about a username: It can have letters and numbers, but no spaces or punctuation marks.

I do not believe that is correct. A username should only have letters and numbers but it can have spaces or underscores (_), which are seen as the same character, as well as most other pubctuation marks. However, the one character that any user name should NOT have is an ampersand (&) character as that character is used to separate the GET variables in a URL and WILL cause the username to be incorrectly interpreted and WILL make the User and User Talk pages difficult to access.

The problem is that the MediaWiki software does not check usernames for validity. - Huttite 03:53, 7 February 2009 (EST)
